The snug lobby of the Builder’s Level was divided into a reception area and a bar counter with four stools pulled up under it. Keifon and Agna approached the reception desk and listened to the innkeeper’s description of the rooms on offer. Keifon professed no strong preferences, so Agna chose a single room with a shared bathroom down the hall. The innkeeper repeated, “One room, one bed?” as though Agna hadn’t understood the question.

“Yes, please,” Agna said, brightening her voice until it threatened to crack. Her polite facade outlasted the innkeeper’s, and finally an apprentice was summoned to show them up a short stairway to their room.

It was a relief to have a base of operations, however temporary it might be. This room was much like the one they’d had at the Kaveran border. The bed was set on a heavy wooden frame and covered with a blanket woven in a complex pattern of red and white. At this time of year, the fireplace was swept out and unused, and a vase of flowers stood on the mantel. One large window faced what was probably the street, though it was covered in thick red drapes to keep out the summer heat.

The two of them unpacked the belongings they’d need for the next few days and freshened up, then returned to the street.

Agna felt light and free, having shed her backpack. The discussion about being thrown out of a restaurant nagged the back of her mind. The question rushed out as they waited to cross the street. “Is there anywhere that wouldn’t treat you badly if they knew about your name?”

The tension around Keifon’s mouth eased. “Not around here, no. This is a nice neighborhood. It’s sweet of you to ask, though.” He looked up and down the street. “These days, I think there are more Kaveran travelers than there used to be. So they might be more used to you. We should be fine.”

Perhaps it was the best they could ask for. “Mostly, I want to get some lunch without wanting to punch somebody in the eye.”

At least he chuckled. “Hmm, maybe I know a place, then.”
